Eminem First to 60 Million Facebook Likes

Posted on 10:09 PM by Unknown

Eminem has taken control of the social media world in much the same way that his albums seem to dominate the industry album charts. On Wednesday, Eminem became the first individual Facebook user to amass 60 million "Likes" for his profile, indicating that he is perhaps the most famous celebrity on a global scale. Eminem generally populates his Facebook page with links to his interviews and music videos.
For now, just amassing such a huge social media following is the news item to be considered. But in the future, it may be that entertainers like Eminem, Lady Gaga and others will choose to forgo traditional methods of ticket and album sales and interact directly with their fans through social media and other platforms.
Comedian Louis C.K. recently pulled off two direct sales of his merchandise and ticket sales online, without paying TicketMaster or any other broker in the process. Eminem, Rihanna and others are likely bound by ironclad promotional agreements through their respective agencies, so they surely couldn't get involved with any similar tactics. At least, not yet.
With the huge reach and impact of platforms like Facebook and Twitter, celebrities will soon realize that there is no need for them to pay marketing and distribution agencies to sell their merchandise or tickets to their shows. Instead, much more efficient and cost-effective providers will probably provide fulfillment services, with fans making purchases and ordering items directly through Facebook profiles and other sites. The future is rapidly approaching and it may not be very bright for the same album companies and record labels that have struggled for years with the rise of online music sharing and other threats to the industry.
